Lead Abatement

Class Description

Lead work is licensed work. If you're doing renovation, inspection, or abatement in older housing, Virginia requires the training — and contractors need certified people on the crew.

CCWA offers five lead courses, all approved by Virginia's Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. Most run for two to four days. Pick the one that matches the role you're licensing for.

Which course do I need?

Lead Abatement Worker — for the person doing the abatement work. This 16-hour course includes a required minimum of 8 hours of hands-on training.
Lead Abatement Supervisor — training provides information on lead-based paint abatement and regulatory guidelines for those individuals that will plan and/or oversee lead abatement work. This 32-hour course includes a required minimum of 8 hours for hands-on training.
Lead Abatement Inspector — for performing lead-based paint inspections and clearance examinations. Covers inspection and clearance procedures under state and federal regulations, plus the legal obligations that inspectors carry. Prerequisite for the Virginia Lead Inspector license.
Lead Abatement Risk Assessor — for those individuals who wish to perform lead-based paint Risk Assessment or Lead Hazard Screening services. This class prepares students to perform on-site risk assessment, take samples, determine the severity of lead hazards, and develop options for eliminating those hazards. This 16-hour course includes the required 4 hours of hands-on training. Prerequisite for the Virginia Lead Risk Assessor license.
Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) — for renovation, repair, and painting contractors working in housing with lead-based paint. Developed by the EPA with HUD. Meets EPA's RRP Rule and HUD's Lead Safe Housing Rule. Includes EPA-required hands-on components. 8-hour, one day course.

Important: RRP photo requirement

CCWA must issue a unique course completion certificate to every individual who passes the RRP course. When you create your profile, use your full legal name and home address, and email a photo of your full face to jmcgarry@ccwa.vccs.edu. Include RRP photo in the subject line. A cell phone photo is fine.

You will not receive certification for this course without a photo.
